Lowick, Northumberland

Back in the mid to late 80’s I was working for an insurance broker and looking after a client that owned a large farming estate in Northumberland.  Through this connection we found a lovely holiday cottage and spent a couple of holidays there enjoying the peace and tranquility of the countryside.

The donkey in LowickWe felt so at home there that we seriously considered selling up and moving there on a permanent basis, there was a definite attraction.  It was also close to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) where we visited many times and in fact where we got engaged!

There was even a donkey in the grounds that used to come and knock on the kitchen window every morning for its toast …

Imagine how we felt last week then when we found that Cathy’s Great Great Grandfather and his family actually lived and worked in the same area, indeed at least one of his children was born in Lowick!  The stranger thing was that Cathy has only been talking to her friend, Sue about this cottage that very same day … spooky or what?

Now it’s not a huge place so we are now wondering if they actually worked on the same farm that we stayed … watch this space!

(we have been in touch with the current owners to see if they have any records of past tenants, fingers crossed!)
