Dodgson and Dixon Family Unit

Cathy and I are heading down to the Skipton area this coming weekend and hope to visit the cemetery where my Grandparents, Eddie DODGSON (1903-1976) and Lily Eleanor DIXON, (1905-1980) are buried.

Grandma and Grandad Dodgson

Grandma and Grandad Dodgson

Eddie died way back in 1976, on my Dad’s Birthday, and Lily a few years later in December 1980.

Although Eddie was born in Colne, Lancashire, his family came from Leeds, West Yorkshire. His father, Edward George DODGSON (1851-1940) , was born and lived on what is now one of the main shopping streets, Vicar Lane, before moving to Skipton around the time he married his wife, Ann Ellen TILLOTSON (1863-1937) in 1888. The family were in Colne by the time Eddie’s sister, Sarah DODGSON (1898-1958) was born.

Lily was born in Langcliffe, just North of Settle, Yorkshire, to George Gordon DIXON (1875-1957) and Mary PRESTON (1882-1929). On the 1911 Census, George was described as a Granite Quarryman.

A few of my relatives still live around that area and so we might also be able to have a catch up with one or two of them too, whilst we are so close. Will have to see how the time goes, as it’s only an overnight stay.

Eddie Dodgson (1903 – 1976)

One of 6 children shown on the 1911 census, Eddie was the 2nd youngest at 8 years old and was living with his family at 35 Grosvenor Street, Colne, Lancashire. He had been born at Nº 6 Atkinson Street, about a mile away, so they had not moved to far since then. View Larger Map…

The Lancastria – 17th June 1940

I wonder what was going through Gunner Chute’s thoughts 72 years today when at 15:48hrs the cruise liner, Lancastria that was to be his safe passage back home came under attack from enemy aircraft. After 3 direct hits, apparently from a German Junkers 88 bomber, the Lancastria sank, within 20 minutes, taking with her many,…

Shand or Scott?

This is an old photo that is definitely from Cathy’s side of the family.  Trouble is, we are not sure who the lady is … we think maybe a Shand or a Scott – does anyone recognise her?  It would be great to put a name to it.

Samuel Preston Dixon (1900 – 1982)

This is a lovely photo of my paternal Grandmother’s brother, Samuel Preston Dixon who was born in Langcliffe, just north of Settle now in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in England. Samuel was the eldest of 5 children and the 1901 census shows him, at 6 months of age living with his parents, 2 uncles…

Never Say Die

Cathy’s Auntie Peggy (Margaret Scott) was married  to Billy Lawson and whenever there is any horse racing on, I am always reminded that Lester Piggott won the Derby on Never Say Die, a horse connected to Uncle Billy’s family. I believe the horse was trained by Joe Lawson (1881 – 1964) who was born in…

Beryl Bryant

Some years ago I borrowed a box of old photos from my Auntie Beryl and scanned them to my PC.  They have been transferred from PC to PC as I have upgraded and now that this project has started up I will be showing some of the better one here. This isn’t a photo of…

Lowick, Northumberland

Back in the mid to late 80’s I was working for an insurance broker and looking after a client that owned a large farming estate in Northumberland.  Through this connection we found a lovely holiday cottage and spent a couple of holidays there enjoying the peace and tranquility of the countryside. We felt so at…

Archibald Trezise (1883 – 1945/47)

Archibald was my Great Grand Uncle, son of Joseph Trezise (born in Sancreed, Cornwall, 1840 – 1897) and Elizabeth Webber (born in Lelant, Cornwall, (1844 – 1905), he was born in Maesteg, Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales. According to the 1891 census return he was a 7 year old scholar living at 38 Rock Street, Cwmdu in…
