Samuel Preston Dixon (1900 – 1982)

A lovely photo of a very young Samuel, maybe taken on his grandfather's farm in the Yorkshire DalesThis is a lovely photo of my paternal Grandmother’s brother, Samuel Preston Dixon who was born in Langcliffe, just north of Settle now in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in England.

Samuel was the eldest of 5 children and the 1901 census shows him, at 6 months of age living with his parents, 2 uncles and 2 aunties on his grandparents farm, Hope Hill.

In 1911 his parents completed their census form but then must have realised that he was not staying with them that night as his name has then been crossed out!  It does show however that they were then living in their own place at The Chapel and his father was working at the Roadstone Quarry as a Granite Quarryman.  His brother, George Gordon and his two sisters, Lily Ellonor (as it is shown on the census) and Cicely Elizebeth are also included.

Searching elsewhere we find that 10 year old Samuel is registered at one of his grandfather’s farms, The Mow (possibly Row) Farm, Wrigglesworth, Longpreston on that night!
